Spanish Mackerel
Scomberomorus maculatus
Spanish mackerel arrive with the warmest water of the year and leave when it cools. They are fast, streamlined, spotted gold on silver, and they hunt small baitfish in open water at speeds most Bay species cannot manage.
That speed is the whole tactic. Spanish are usually caught trolling small shiny spoons well behind planers at speeds that feel too fast if you are used to fishing for rockfish, or by casting fast-retrieved metal into a surface blitz. A slow presentation gets refused.
They have small sharp teeth and will bite through light mono, so a short length of fluorocarbon is worth the trouble. Eat them fresh — like bluefish, they are rich and do not reward being kept a while.
