Chesapeake SAV Grass Beds & Fish Habitat Guide

Submerged Aquatic Vegetation (SAV) grass beds produce oxygen, filter sediments, and provide critical shelter for juvenile baitfish, blue crabs, striped bass, snakeheads, and largemouth bass across Chesapeake Bay salinity zones.

BAY SALINITY CLASSIFICATION

The 4 Chesapeake Salinity Ecological Zones

1. Tidal Fresh (0.0 - 0.5 ppt)

Susquehanna Flats, Upper Potomac, Elk River. Dominant grass: Wild Celery, Hydrilla, Water Stargrass.

2. Oligohaline (0.5 - 5.0 ppt)

Sassafras River, Chester River, C&D Canal. Dominant grass: Redhead Grass, Horned Pondweed, Sago Pondweed.

3. Mesohaline (5.0 - 18.0 ppt)

Mid-Bay, Choptank River, Severn River. Dominant grass: Widgeon Grass, Eelgrass beds.

4. Polyhaline (18.0 - 30.0 ppt)

Lower Bay, Tangier Sound, Coastal Ocean Bays. Dominant grass: Dense Eelgrass meadows.

SUBMERGED VEGETATION PROFILES

5 Key Chesapeake SAV Grass Species

TIDAL FRESH & FLATS

Wild Celery (Vallisneria americana)

Ribbon-like tape grass forming vast underwater meadows across the Susquehanna Flats. Primary forage shelter for post-spawn striped bass, perch, and blue crabs.

Target Lure Match: 1/2oz Swimbait Jigs along grass edges
POTOMAC & ELK RIVER

Hydrilla (Hydrilla verticillata)

Densely branched canopy grass forming thick mats in Mattawoman Creek and Potomac river arms. Holds trophy largemouth bass and snakeheads on low tide.

Target Lure Match: 1/2oz Vibrating Chatterbait & Texas Craws
CREEK ARMS & COVES

Spatterdock / Yellow Pond Lily

Broad floating heart-shaped leaves over thick root systems. The premier habitat for ambush strikes from Northern Snakehead and big largemouth bass.

Target Lure Match: 1/2oz Hollow-Body Weedless Frog
MID-BAY & COASTAL

Eelgrass (Zostera marina)

Cold-water polyhaline marine grass dominant in Tangier Sound and Sinepuxent Bay. Primary habitat for juvenile summer flounder, speckled trout, and blue crabs.

Target Lure Match: Tandem Fluke Bucktail Teasers
BRACKISH COVES

Widgeon Grass (Ruppia maritima)

Highly adaptable thread-like grass thriving across wide salinity ranges. Creates rich nursery habitat for white perch, spot, and juvenile croaker.

Target Lure Match: 1/8oz Beetle Spinners & Finesse Rigs

ECOLOGICAL ZONES

Tidal Wetland Habitat Zones

Subtidal Zone

0-6ft depth, SAV dominant

Permanently flooded areas hosting the dense meadows of Eelgrass and Widgeon grass. Critical foraging grounds for striped bass (stripers) and white perch hunting juvenile crabs.

Intertidal Zone

Marsh edge, fluctuating tides

The marshy fringes that are exposed during low tide and flooded during high tide. Extremely productive for ambush predators like snakeheads and largemouth bass pushing baitfish against the mud banks.

Freshwater Tidal

Upper tributaries, heavy flow

Located at the extreme upper reaches of bay tributaries where tidal pull remains but salinity drops near zero. Primary habitat for massive blue catfish, channel catfish, and carp.

Saltmarsh Creek

Coastal plain, cordgrass

Winding creeks cutting through vast expanses of Spartina cordgrass. Characterized by muddy bottoms and steep drop-offs favored by flounder and black drum feeding on mud crabs.

Riparian Shoreline & Cover Structure Guide

Riprap & Seawalls

Target Species: Striped Bass, White Perch

Algae and barnacles on these structures attract baitfish. Fish parallel with squarebill crankbaits or bounce 1/4oz jigs along the rocks.

Dock Pilings

Target Species: Striped Bass, Flounder

Pilings break current and provide ambush points. Skip soft plastics deep under the docks or drop live spot straight down next to the oldest pilings.

Underwater Grass Beds (SAV)

Target Species: Snakehead, Largemouth Bass

Grass beds are oxygen factories. Cast weedless frogs over matted hydrilla or swim paddletails through the sparse edges of wild celery.

Woody Debris Jams

Target Species: Crappie, Blue Catfish

Fallen trees (laydowns) offer complex vertical cover. Pitch small jigs vertically for crappie, or anchor upstream and float cut bait into the jam for catfish.

Bridge Abutments

Target Species: Striped Bass, Tautog

Massive concrete structures create heavy current eddies. Cast heavy bucktails into the up-current side and let them sweep naturally past the piling.

Deep Channel Bends

Target Species: Trophy Catfish, Red Drum

The outside bend of a river channel is carved deep by current. Use heavy fish-finder rigs with circle hooks and fresh bunker to target bottom feeders.
